Item description

Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), while its saturated fatty acid content is low.

Linoleic Acid

Linoleic acid is abundant in many vegetable oils. However, evening primrose oil is one of the few rich sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Gamma-Linolenic Acid

Gamma-linolenic acid belongs to the omega-6 fatty acid family. This fatty acid is not considered essential because the body can produce it from linoleic acid.

However, the body's requirement for gamma-linolenic acid may sometimes increase. In such cases, supplementation with evening primrose oil may be advisable.

Gamma-linolenic acid supports the production of prostaglandins, substances that play an important role in many metabolic processes in the body.

It also has a beneficial influence on the skin's ability to regenerate and on emotional balance in older women.

The body can produce most fatty acids itself. However, linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid are known as essential fatty acids:

  • These fatty acids must be obtained through the diet.

  • As an essential fatty acid, linoleic acid is a precursor to many other important substances in the body. Linoleic acid plays a role in vision, the nervous system, the skin and the immune system.
